Provenance |
Belonged to the descendents of Peter Matthews who was involved in the Rebellion of 1837. Family History as told to Katrina Pyke by Richard Matthews, Saturday September 23. Mary Rattan Mathhews was estranged from her father Peter Rattan for many years. The reason was that she was betrothed to marry afriend of Lord Simcoe, but chose instead to marry Thomas Matthews. A few years after their marriage, Peter Rattan sent a set of silver ware (monogrammed with an M on each handle) to Mary and Thomas to make peace with them. Over the years, the set was divided amongst the various family members and descendants. Richard chose to donate those pieces he had left to the museum in the year 2000.
